Wrinkles are ridges, folds or creases on the skin and they usually are a result of aging or an unhealthy lifestyle among other things. Short exposure to the sun is beneficial to the body since it needs the vitamin D acquired from sun exposure. However, exposing your skin to the sun for more than the necessary amount of time results in wrinkled skin. The skin also loses its strength and becomes less flexible due to loss of the connective tissue. When your skin is exposed to UV light for a long time, the connective tissue – collagen and elastic fibers which lie underneath the skin, are broken down thus resulting on loss of elasticity. Apart from wrinkled skin, overexposure to UV light can cause skin cancer. Since there are some people whose careers require that they spend a lot of time in the sun, then protective clothing should be worn. They include long sleeved shirts and blouses, a hat and light, closed shoes.
This bad habit accelerates the aging process and it changes the amount of blood supply to your skin. The tobacco in the cigarettes has negative effects on your skin including giving it a coarse texture. As mentioned earlier, wrinkles can either be deep or on the surface. Smoking results in formation of deep wrinkles which may require expensive treatment methods. Additionally, the skin becomes wrinkled much earlier. There have been cases of people in their 20s getting wrinkles due to smoking.
Sugar (especially refined sugar) and foods considered as high-glycemic also contribute to early formation of wrinkles. Sugar is not bad but when consumed more frequently, it becomes harmful not only to your skin but also other parts of the body. Simple carbohydrates and refined sugar increase the level of insulin in the body which leads to inflammation. When inflammation occurs, it produces enzymes that break down elastin and collagen thus leading to saggy and wrinkled skin. Additionally, sugar molecules usually attach themselves to proteins on the skin and causes them to be malformed and stiff.
For skin to look good and retain its elasticity, it needs to be well hydrated. Alcohol always dehydrates the body thus leaving the skin looking less plump and fresh. If you consume alcohol often, the damaging effects on the skin will become permanent after a period of time thus making you have wrinkled skin even in your youthful years.
